The Yorkshire Rail Academy is able to offer you a range of expertise and services to help meet your business skills needs. You will also find that our 'employer led' approach is both responsive and highly flexible
Development and Delivery of Training
Training courses may be 'off the shelf', or we will work with you to develop or tailor this to suit your requirements. This may be rail specific or generic skills development. Training can either be delivered here at the Yorkshire Rail Academy or, if more convenient, at a venue to suit your company
Apprentice Recruitment and Training
Through the Rail CoVE we have the capability to provide for a range rail engineering apprenticeships. This includes:-
- Signalling Design, Signalling Installation and Signalling Maintenance
- P.Way Maintenance and Renewals
- Engineering Technical Support
- Electrification and Plant Maintenance
- Traction and Rolling Stock Maintenance
Our Assessors work closely with apprentices and their supervisors / mentors out in the work place, and we also have the benefit of a realistic training environment here at the YRA for skills development and assessment
Educational Development / Qualifications
We have a full prospectus of educational programmes available through York College. Working with the college we are also able to customise these for the rail industry. The Rail CoVE at the YRA has experience in running rail focused National Certificates in Electrical and Electronic Engineering, Operations and Maintenance Engineering and in Civil Engineering.

The Foundation Degree in Engineering provides a flexible progression route for rail employees who have successfully completed their National Certificate, or the full Advanced Apprenticeship Framework. This route is also suitable for those with the HNC level of qualification where the individual will already have achieved credits towards the Foundation Degree. The qualification is partly work based and is designed to provide a close link between the education of the student and the industry
Skills Development Projects
The YRA will explore funding opportunities for specific projects to address skills requirements where appropriate. Projects may be funded / part-funded by, for example, the Learning and Skills Council (LSC), Regional Development Agency (RDA) or the European Social Fund (ESF), providing that there is a clear link to their agenda for skills development
NVQ Assessment and Internal Verification Services
We have accredited centres for the provision of NVQs for the rail industry, engineering, business administration and customer services. The centres will also provide an Internal Verification service for companies who have their own assessors, or we will provide training for Assessor and Internal Verifiers on their behalf.
Employer Training Initiatives
Often companies are unaware of these, and the support that is available for the provision of employer training e.g. Train to Gain. In working with you we will identify where these may apply
Training and Conference Facilities
If you are looking for a venue to run your training events, conferences and meetings, you may wish to hire one of our fully equipped training / meeting rooms. We also have an external track and signalling facility available for hire which is ideal for a multitude of training and demonstration purposes.
